The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and NFL superstar has proven himself to be not only one of the game's most unique players, showman and entertainers, but a man who's influence on a play and a game – and the greater the stage is, the greater Mahomes rises – is second to none. Not only has he helped the Chiefs built a dynasty since he took over the starting quarterback role his rookie season, he is the face of the NFL, a character and a phenomenon, with a flair for the unexpected.

The last (of many) example: Super Bowl VLIII, February 2024: The Chiefs haven't played well through the entire game and trailed the San Francisco 49ers for most of the time. With 1:51 left in the game and the Chief trailing 19-16, Mahomes drove his team the length of the pitch to tie the game at 19 on a field goal apiece and force overtime.

In extra time, with the Chiefs again trailing 22-19, Mahomes: run on 4 down in order to get 1st down run again on 3rd down and got 1st down and then, with 0.03 seconds left, threw for a touchdown that gave the Chiefs the Vince Lombardi Trophy. It was his 3rd Super Bowl win and his 3rd Super Bowl MVP.

Historically, the Chief haven't been a very successful franchise. The club was founded in 1959 under ownership of the Hunt family, who still owns it today, in Dallas, Texas, under the name of Dallas Texans. After coming to the conclusion that the city of Dallas was too small to heaving two football teams, Lamar Hunt moved the team to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1963, where it remained ever since.

The Chiefs won Super Bowl IV in 1969 after beating the Minnesota Vikings 23-7, in the last year before the American Football League merged with the National Football League to create the NFL. Its quarterback Len Dawson set franchise records for career passing yardage (28,507) and passing touchdowns (237), and also owns the single-season mark for passing touchdowns (30). He was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection.

That year was the last in which the team won the American Football Conference until 2019. But before we are talking about the new area, the Mahomes Magical Mystery Tour, there were some things worth mentioning.

There were some decent seasons in the 80's under head coach Marty Schottenheimer and a frightening defense, led by Neil Smith and the late, great Derrick Thomas, and a punishing running game, led by "the Nigerian Nightmare", running back Christian Okoye, but the team just couldn't get back to the Super Bowl.

Before the 1993 season, the Chiefs shook the world of football by trading for two Super Bowl MVP's and future Hall of Famers – quarterback Joe Montana from the 49ers and running back Marcus Allen from the Los Angeles raiders. Again, no Super Bowls.

For the 2013 season, the Chiefs hired Andy Reid as head coach. The comeback trail planted it seeds. At the 3rd round of the NFL draft that season, the team selected a tight end from Cincinnati, Travis Kelce, who since is holding NFL records for: most consecutive 1,000 yards in a seasons, most receiving yards in a season and most playoff receiving touchdowns for a tight end. OK, we must also mention it: As a side show, Kelce is the boyfriend of music legend Taylor Swift.

Two years later came a first playoff win after 23 years. And two more years down the road, the Chiefs selected Mahomes from Texas Tech. The results (until now, lest we forget that Mahomes is only 28 years old and is entering his prime): A 31-20 victory over the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV (2020), a loss to Tom Brady's led Tampa Bay in Super Bowl LV (2021), a year off, a 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII (2023) and the latest heroics in Las Vegas.

And the best must yet to come.
