When a music star is named by Time magazine amongst the world’s most influential, has five Grammies to his name and is second only to Elvis Presley in the speed of having six number ones in the top 100 best selling records, there can be no doubt that you are dealing with a truly major talent. This then is the world of Bruno Mars, a man who was the product of a musical family from Honolulu and has delighted in making music in the majority of his life since being born as Peter Gene Hernandez in 1985.
Coming from a fascinating mix of musical and cultural traditions Bruno had many influences in his early life as a musician. Bruno was the son of a father who combined Puerto Rican and Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry and a mother from the Philippines with a mixture of Filipino and Spanish ancestry his mother sang and danced, his father played Little Richard type music and what’s more his uncle did impressions of Elvis, encouraging his nephew to sing on stage at the age of three. It is hardly surprising that on graduating from high school he headed for Los Angeles and a career in music.
