The USA national football team has a long Word Cup tradition taking part in no less than 9 tournaments (including Brazil).
They qualified to Brazil after wining Mexico, Jamaica, Costa Rica, Panama and Honduras at home in the 4th qualification stage.
Although the USA is not considered as a leader in the football/soccer world, the US national football team is exceptional. As the American mentality praise Excellency in every sport, the chance to represent the whole country in major event beside the Olympics, gives the American people a rare chance to unite through their support of the team.
The US team was one of the 13 teams which took part in the first tournament in Uruguay (1934). They reached the semifinals only to be defeated by Argentina 1:6.
During their next tournament (1950 in Brazil) they beat the highly favorites England 1:0 in what is still considered as one of the biggest upsets in the tournament history. Not to mention the fact that the team was composed by part time players.
It took them 40 more years before the Yanks (nickname) will participate in another World Cup (Italy 1990). Since then they have qualified for every tournament.
They also hosted the 1994 tournament which was considered to be a big success.
The current coach (from 2011), is the legendary German striker Jurgen klinsmann. The most capped player is Cobi Jones with 164 appearances and the top goal scorer is Landon Donovan with 57 goals with 154 appearances.
With key players such as Jozy Altidore from Sunderland, Clint Dempsey who plays in the MLS and Landon Donovan, together with the support of Millions of Americans, the US team will be a tough opponent.
