Whatever Tottenham Hotspur's 2023-24 season would end, there is just one thing Spur's supporter will speak about during the whole campaign – Spur-less Harry Kane, as club legend and all-time leading goal-scorer left the club for Bayern Munich after 12 years of brilliant service.
How will Tottenham get along without Kane? No one knows, but it will be different. Completely Different in North London.
Prior for Kane leaving for Germany, Tottenham appointed Celtic Glasgo's Ange Postecoglou as their new manager. After Kane's leaving, his long-time running mate Son Heung-min got the armband.
During the summer window, Tottenham acted quickly, while the Kane yearly affair dragged on: The club signed Israeli Manor Solomon for free from Shakhtar Donetsk (after spending the last season on loan with neighbors Fulham), was able to pule a coup with only 40 million GBP for Leicester midfielder James Madison, signed goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from Empoli, in what probably signals the long-time goalkeeper and club captain Hugo Lloris' days are numbered, and spent 25 million GBP in order to turn Dejan Kulusevski's loan deal from Juventus a permanent one. Spurs also added highly-rated defender Ashley Phillips from Blackburn Rovers and Wolfsburg Dutch defender Micky van de Ven.
Although the Spurs have many trophies in their cabinet from before and after, there is little doubt that their greatest period of dominance came at the start of the 1960s. In the 1960-61 season Spurs achieved the first ever “double” of First Division championship and the FA Cup, won the FA Cup again the next year and reached the European Cup semi-final and then went on in 1962-3 to win the European Cup Winners Cup, making them the first British side to win a European trophy.
This heady period was under the managership of Bill Nicholson and with a team containing many great names including captain Danny Blanchflower, a talented and intellectual footballer twice voted FPA Player of the Year. Blanchflower memorably said that “Football is about glory. It is about doing things in style and with a flourish” which to many sums up the Spurs playing philosophy.
The late Jimmy Greaves was to become the Club’s highest ever goal scorer with 266 goals and the highest goal scorer in the history of England’s top tier football. Injury kept him out of the final stages of England’s World Cup victory in 1966. However, during his last season with Tottenham, Kane moved into first place with 280 goals scored in 435 appearances.
Dave Mackay made 318 appearances for Spurs between 1959 and 1968 and was, as a hard tackling midfielder, a crucial factor in the team’s success. Brian Clough described him as Tottenham’s greatest ever player and brought him to his then club, Derby County.
Steve Perryman is the club’s all-time appearance leader with 854 matches between 1969-1986. Second is Gary Mabbutt with 611 appearances between 1982-1998.
Turning to a Tottenham hero of later years, Glen Hoddle who made 490 appearances in the years between 1975-1987 was renowned for his goal scoring skills and for the style with which he played. Like many great players, he made the most complicated thing on the pitch seem easy. Along with Greaves, Hoddle is considered to be the player who influenced the most on Tottenham’s and England’s style of play.
In 2019, Tottenham moved into brand-new, 62,850-seat state of the art Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The new stadium replaced White Hart Lane, the club’s home between 1899-2017.
