Not so long ago, just over one calendar year, but in a different pre-pandemic world, the Toronto Raptors were NBA champions in 2018-19. It was the first time the 1995 expansion team has reached the finals and the first and only time they have won it all.
The championship season marked the first time the organization has won the Eastern conference. Among the Atlantic division, it was a sequel of runs, with the raptors dominating the division almost on a yearly basis since 2014.
The roster has somewhat changed from that championship year. Gone are finals MVP Kawhi Leonard, as well as center Marc Gasol, Danny Green, Serge Ibaka and all-dependable Kyle Lowry.
In their place, president of basketball operations and the architect of the championship run Masai Ujiri has built a young and coming team, including, for the first time in its history, a Canadian - Dalano Banton – selected in the 2nd round of the NBA draft.
And now, over a year after playing away from home in Tempa due to covid-19 restrictions, the Raptors are back at home sweet home of Scotiabank Arena, where they have a wonderful .760 winning percentage, getting a V in 152out of their last 200 regular home games.
Even-though the organization has existed only a relatively short period of 26 years, some eye-catching players have played for the Raptors and reaching cult hero status with the fans. The first, of course, is Vince Carter, Mr. “Air Canada”, who won rookie of the year in 1999 and carried the club to its first play-off appearance. Carter gave the city of Toronto seven unforgettable seasons, in which he became five-time NBA All-Star, the all-time Raptors leader in field goals made, second on the all-time scoring list and holds the record for most points scored in a single game with 51.
Chris Bosh may be the best statistical player to ever grace the Toronto Raptors, playing the second-most games of anyone. He also played the most minutes of any past Raptors player with 18,813. He has the most total points, the most total rebounds, both offensive and defensive, as well as the most total blocks of any past Raptors player.
Antonio Davis comes close to every rebounding record on the Toronto Raptors. However, he does hold the single-season record in rebounds for the Raptors with 787. He was most certainly known for his ability to grab boards, but he's also seventh in all-time scoring with 3994 total points.
