Bővebben SPAL
They shouldn’t really be here, playing their trade in Italy’s Serie A. They lack the names, they lack the stadium, they lack the number of supporters, they lack the funding and the financial stability. But They ARE here, the boys in blue and white of SPAL competing with the big boys.
SPAL was established in 1907 by the name of Circolo Ars et Labor in the city of Ferrara in the Emilia-Romagna region. What does arts and labor have to do with football? God only knows, since the founder of the club was a priest. It came closer to football six years later, at least by name, when the club became an all-sports club, hereby changing its name to Societa Polisportiva Ars et Labor, SPAL for short. The club mainly played in Italy’s lower leagues, until it was promoted to Serie A in 1951, and stayed there until 1968. In between, it managed to reach the final of the Coppa Italia in 1961-62 but lost to Napoli. During that period, a certain midfielder, named Fabio Capello, played SPAL’s youth team and led it to a championship. Powerhouse AC Milan were interested but the club was able to keep Capello in blue and white for three seasons, 1964-1967, and he became its most famous player ever, until it was time to move on, to Roma. As Capello left, the club was relegated to Serie B and stayed there for decades to come. And not only that, but the situation went from bad to worse, as the team kept falling, reaching Italy’s 4th division.
In 2005 it all came trembling down, as SPAL went into a bankruptcy. Another financial disaster happened in 2012 and the team came as low as 5th division and about to be torn apart and cease to exist. It took a merger with tiny neighbor A.C. Giacomense to breathe life into the not-functioning body that SPAL became. The merger helped the club to stay in the 4th division. Then started the climb up. At the conclusion of the 2016-17 a miracle happened, as SPAL earned promotion to Serie A after a 49-year absence.
As a team with no real assets, SPAL relay on mostly an all-Italian squad, where a close-nit dressing room and comradery are keys to the success.
SPAL play its home matches in the tiny 13,135-seat Stadio Paolo Mazza, named after the club’s late and beloved owner.
