They were young. It was their first stop outside their home country and they were lean, mean and hungry. And they were fast, very fast, left burning marks on the pitch and flourished inside the box, often leaving defenders and goalkeepers alike in confusion, wondering what has just happened. Brazilians Romario and Ronaldo first exploded on the world scene while wearing PSV Eindhoven red and white and the world was left in awe.
First was Romario. He was already a big star in Brazil, having won two state championships with Vasco de Gama and arriving in the Netherlands at the not so young age of 22 in 1988. Romario didn’t waste time, scoring 26 goals in his first season and then really exploding, going for 61 goals in two seasons, 17 in a short due to injury season and 31 goals in the fifth. In all, Romario scored 127 goals in 142 matches in five wonderful seasons in PSV, before moving to Barcelona and winning the world cup with Brazil.
Ronaldo was next. “The Phenomenon” arrived in Eindhoven in 1994 after his mentor Romario told him that it was a great place to start his European career. He was just 17 at the time, but it didn’t matter, as he has already led his boyhood club Cruzeiro to a state championship and the Copa do Brazil. Once in Holland, Ronaldo was on fire, going for 35 goals in just 36 matches in his first season. He returned next season with 17 goals in 21 matches, because of a knee injury. And he too was on his way to Barcelona.
And not that PSV Eindhoven didn’t feature major starts – Dutch and internationals – throughout its long and decorated history. Along the way, there is a long and extremely respectable list of players who have worn the red and white along the years: twins Willy and René van der Kerkhof Ruud Gullit, who came from Feyenoord in 1985 and played 86 matches, scoring 46 goals Dane Soren Lerby Belgium Eric Gerets defender Jaap Stam striker Ruud van Nistelrooy (62 goals in 67 matches) Wing man Arjen Robben (18 goals in 56 matches) Mark van Bommel (194 matches and 52 goals in two spells) and Phillip Cocu (189 matches, 54 goals in two spells, before returning to the club after retirement and leading it to a league titles).
It’s no wonder that PSV is associated with Dutch giant electronic firm Phillips and its name is a part of it - Philips Sport Vereniging (Phillips Sports Union). The football team was established in 1910 by the factory and re-established in 1913, after the factory wished to have a team its employees can play for. 1910 saw ground breaking for Phillips Stadium, what is today, after some renovations, a magnificent 35,000-seat sports venue.
The team first won the Eredivisie title in 1928-29, first KNVP Cup in 1949-50 and first Johan Cruyff Cup in 1992. In all, PSV won 24 league championships, 9 Dutch Cups and 11 Johan Cruyff Cups. In addition, the team has won the UEFA Cup in 1977-78 and the European Champions Cup in 1987-88.
As a Dutch super power, PSV’s biggest rivalries are with last remaining member of the big three – Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam. Not only do the matches between the teams often heat-up, but they will most likely determine the league’s champions. Off the pitch, armies of fans of the clubs often clash before and after matches.
