Bővebben Olympique de Marseille ( OM )
Olympique de Marseille, also known as L’OM, was founded in 1899. And there never was, it seems, a dull moment since. Big stories, dramas, scandals, bigger than life footballers and club officers - all of them have been connected to Marseille over the years, as well as some excellent football and a lot of honors achieved along the way.
Marseille won the French Cup for the first time in 1924 and a championship five years later. Over the decades, the team has won some trophies on one hand, but suffered from poor play and mis-management on the other, that led it to be relegated to the second division on few occzsions.
Marseille’s golden area occurred in mid-80’s, after it was bought by lavish French businessman Bernard Tapie, who wasted no time in purchasing some of the leading French and international stars in his quest to build an iconic football team: France’s Alain Giresse, Jean-Pierre Papin, Didier Deschamps, Basile Boli, Marcel Desailly, Fabien Barthez and Eric Cantona arrived, together with England’s Chris Waddle and German’s Klaus Allofs and Rudi Völler. The results were four consecutives Ligue 1 titles (1989-1992) and a 1993 Champions League final win over Milan. It all cemented Marseille a one of the greatest teams in European football.
It didn’t take long for controversy to strike. Allegations that Tapie has tried to fix results with some players from Valenciennes in order for Marseille to concentrate on European football turned out true, and the team was forced to be relegated to the second division and stripped of its Ligue 1 title. Tapie, of course, was forced to step down and the team was bought by Adidas owner and CEO Robert Louis-Dreyfus. More notable players came along the way, like Didier Drogba, Robert Pires, Franck Ribery and Samir Nasri, and Marseille came close but finished as runner up in the quest to win some titles. It all changed in 2009-10 season, as the club won its last Ligue 1 title.
In all, Marseille won 9 Ligue 1 championships and 10 French Cups. In addition to the Champions League title, the team has reach the finals once more, as well as two Europe League runner ups.
Traditionally, the club’s biggest rivalry is with Paris Saint-Germain. The match between the teams is known as Le Classique and more often than not this match has direct effect on the identity of the eventual league champions. Le Classique is known to be a heated affair, both on and off the pitch. During recent years, it was Olympique Lyon that has become one of Marseille’s biggest rivals.
Marseille play its home matches in 67,394 seat Stade Vélodrome, to which it moved in in 1937.
