Bővebben Newcastle United
October 7, 2021. This is the date who forever will be embedded in the heart and soul of every Newcastle United supporter. This is the date that their beloved club, after 14 years under the not-so beloved owner Mike Ashley, was purchased by a consortium of companies led by Saudi Arabian government's sovereign wealth fund for 300 million BP.
Suddenly, Newcastle – club and fans alike – find themselves in unfamiliar territory as the richest football club on the globe. Suddenly, money will not be a problem, as Newcastle will dive deep into the market and offer lucrative contracts to just about any player they wish to sign.
But first comes first as the club had to make sure it will not be relegated from the Premier League at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season. Then manager steve Bruce was fired and in came Eddie How, who was successful in guarantying survival long before the conclusion of the season.
What players would Newcastle bring to the North-east of England is anyone's guess. They won't come cheap. As the Saudis made their intension clear from day 1: Silverware. They want Premier League titles and they crave for those magic European nights at St James' Park. Nothing less is acceptable.
The city is out there, in the far North-East of England, lying on the northern bank of River Tyne, near the Scotland boarder, almost trapped between two enormous national parks. And there’s more: the weather is terrible, especially those icy cold Northern Sea winds, accompanied by freezing temperature, rain and snow. But then there is a hot spot, lighting up every local kid’s face. It’s called Newcastle United.
There are two points needed to be emphasized before we’ll discuss the football club: St James' Park and the Toon Army. Newcastle’s home is a magnificent 52,534-seat stadium, one of the largest in England. Its grand infrastructure provides a very special match-day experience, when tens of thousands of devoted black and white uniform-wearing fans pushing their beloved team at all times, at all costs.
Which brings us to the Toon Army, the blue color supporters that form a perfect match to the blue color town. Week in and week out, they sell out home matches and approximately 3,000-5,000 of them attend every away match, no matter that both, and only, closest proximity clubs - Newcastle’s bitter rivals Sunderland and Middlesbrough - don’t play in the Premier League. Most often than not, their support overlap that of the home crowd. In their view, expectations are always high, but players effort and dedication to club and city overlaps the team’s position in the table.
Newcastle United was established in 1892 and as its name suggests, it was a merger between two local teams. At the same year, the club moved into St. James’ Park. The new club wasted little time before winning the championship of the First Division in 1904-05, 1906-07 and 1908-09. The club also reached the FA Cup Final in 1905- 1906 and 1908, finally winning it all for the first time in 1910.
Future decades saw more silverware, but also defeats and relegations. In 1971, Newcastle signed Malcolm Macdonald from Luton Town. For five years, Supermac terrorized opponents, scoring 95 goals in 187 appearances. Newcastle had to wait six more years before a new messiah arrived. In 1982, the club signed Liverpool and England legend Kevin Keegan. And he performed. It took a team full of talents – alongside Keegan there were Terry McDermott, John Anderson, David McCreery, Peter Beardsley and Chris Waddle – two seasons, but it went back to the First Division. In all, keegan played two seasons in Tyneside, scoring 48 goals.
When he was gone, a local kid by the name of Paul Gascoigne filled his shoes.
In 1992, Newcastle came calling and Keegan returned from exile in Spain to manage the club. It was showtime, the North-Eastern version. Keegan assembled a group of highly talented players, among them Andy Cole, Lee Clark and Rob Lee and, charged the Second Division with his all-attack attitude and mentality. The result was a promotion to the newly established Premier League. Once there, the Magpies were a force to be reckoned with, as Keegan added more power to the ranks, in the likes of Les Ferdinand and David Ginola, and later Faustino Asprilla and the return of Peter Beardsley. Matches in St. James’ Park were breathtaking events, with rapid, fantastic form of football.
In 1995-96, Newcastle came close to win it all. Very close. By January 96, Manchester United was within 12 points from the leader Newcastle. But then came a 3-4 loss to Liverpool – still regarded as the best match ever in the Premier League – and Newcastle finished a disappointed second.
In 1996, the club paid a record fee for local boy Alan Shearer. In 10 seasons, the magnificent striker went on to smash nearly every possible record, winning all possible awards, except carrying Newcastle to the promised championships. In his final season of 2005-06, Shearer scored his record breaking 201st goal for the club. He is also the Premier League’s top goal scorer, with 260 goals.
Since, Newcastle has been relegated and got promoted again. League and position don’t matter. Well, they do, of course, especially now, But one thing remains certain: attending a match in St. James’ Park and seeing the Toon army in action is a once in a lifetime experience.
