Bővebben Millwall FC
“No one likes us
We don't care
We are Millwall, Super Millwall
We are Millwall from The Den”
(A famous chant of Millwall supporters)
What do you expect from a club that was founded in South-East London, on an island called the Isle of Dogs, by a bunch of factory workers? Your guess is as good as everyone’s. Over a hundred years of existence, Millwall F.C. has maintained its identity as football’s blue color workers, has never been to the Premier League, is attached to all sorts of problems off the field and takes pride in being far from royalty. The Lions’ supporters certainly do.
A random tour – well, nobody tours those areas in East London, so we’ll rephrase: On the way to a Millwall match, one can witness where it all comes from – the stadium is surrounded by the Millwall Cafe, Millwall Community Trust, Lions Store, Millwall FC events & Conference, multi car repair shops, train lines and is mostly an industrial zone, not the place one would like to take a romantic tour at. Over there, it’s all about football and no one is as enthusiastic as Millwall fans. For decades it was one of London’s least developed areas but those days the area faces a change, as re-development projects appear all around and the club itself may be forced look for a new home.
Millwall Rovers – as in Millwall docs, where the factory was located – was founded in 1885. Four years later, it relocated about 7 km to the Athletic Ground, from the north bank of the River Thames to the south bank and changed its name to Millwall Athletics. One more relocation followed before finally, in 1910, the club settled at New Cross and named its stadium The Den. The Athletics was dropped and the club became simply known as Millwall.
World War II hurt Millwall more than other clubs. Not just The Den was greatly damaged during the German air raids over London, forcing the team to play many home matches away from home, the club also lost a great deal of players and it took a long time to recoup.
In 1958, Millwall became one of the founders of English Fourth Division. In 1964, the team began an unparalleled record of 59 home matches without defeat, that last until 1967. During that span, it got promoted twice, up to the Second Division.
In 1988, for the first time in club’s history, Millwall finished the season as Second Division champions and got promoted to the First Division. They finished their first season there in 10th place.
Like its long-suffering and loyal fans, the club is all about continuity, as an average player stays at the club for four years and academy graduates make up around a third of the squad, with a goal of reaching 50 per cent. To be a Millwall player, goes the saying, one needs not necessarily be a good footballer, but rather having the right mentality.
In 1993 Millwall moved to the New Den with a capacity of 20,146, the first all-seater stadium built in England.
Glory came in 2004, as, under manager Dennis Wise, Millwall reached the FA Cup Final, where it lost to Manchester United, but due to United’s Champions League qualification, the club qualified to the UEFA Cup the next season.
One of Millwall’s all-time greats is striker Teddy Sheringham, who started his career at the club and scored 111 goals in 220 appearances between 1982-1991. Sheringham is second on Millwall’s all-time top goal scorers after Neil Harris, who scored 138 goals between 1988-2004, 2007-2011. The club’s most capped player is Barry Kitchener, who recorded 596 matches between 1966-1982.
