Bővebben KK Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade)
The names. There were so many of them, plenty of phenomenal players that have decorated the ranks of KK Crvena Zvezda (Red Star Belgrade) basketball teams since its establishment toward the end of World War II. They have written glory chapters of pride, victories and achievements while wearing the famous red and white uniform, or while playing for the former Yugoslavia national team, or later on for the national team of Serbia. In the last decades, some of them have gained global recognition while playing in the NBA.
The basketball team, a part of the Red Star Sports Club Society, was established in 1945 and was forever associated with the nationalist Serbian. The first decade has cemented its place in Yugoslav basketball elite, as it won 10 consecutive championships (1946-1955) while battling other basketball giants such as cross-city rivals Partizan Belgrade and Croatian teams KK Zadar and KK Split (formally Jugoplastika). When two out of the four met, it was more than a match, it was a full-out war that has created magnificent basketball at its highest level. Red Star played an exciting game of Basketball, full of movement and fast breaks, led by agile centers that could handle and pass the ball with grace, and speedy guards that could shoot the ball out of the building all day long.
In later years, the club has won two more domestic titles in late 60’s and early 70’s. A key figure of those teams was Zoran Slavnic, the not-so-tall point guard, who, in addition to league championships, have carried the team to 3 Yugoslav Cup and a FIBA Cup Winners Cup. Slavnic later coached the club on two terms.
After the breakup of Yugoslavia, Red Star, like other teams, have become a breading farm for NBA teams. Among the notable players that have made the switch were: Vladimir Radmanovic, Dragan Tarlac, Peja Stojakovic and one, Vlade Divac, who actually grew up in Partizan. Divac played for Red Star during only two games of the EuropaLeague and took a lot of criticism for it from Partizan fans. During the 2000’s and on, Red Star has started integrating players from former Yugoslav republics, as well as American players.
In all, Red Star Belgrade has won 12 Yugoslav championships, 3 Serbia and Montenegro League championships, 8 Serbia League championships (the last after the 2022-23 season), 3 Yugoslav Cups, 9 Serbian Cups (the last after the 2022-23 season), 6 Radivoj Korac Cups, 6 Adriatic League championships and a FIBA Saporta Cup.
Two of Red Star's former players were inducted into Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame: Vlade Divac and Dražen Dalipagić, as well as former coach Aleksandar Nikolić. Divac, Dalipagić and Zoran Slavnić were inducted into FIBA Hall of Fame and FIBA's 50 greatest players.
Red Star play its home matches in 5,878-seat Aleksandar Nikolić Hall in Belgrade. European matches are usually played at 18,368-seat Štark Arena.
