It took eleven long and frustrating years, but at the conclusion of 2020-21 season, Inter Milan, one of the giants of Italian and European football, after a decade that was dominated by Juventus, Inter has once again claimedreclaimed its position atop Italian teams, as its won the Scudetto and crowned as Serie A champions for the 19ththird time in its long and illustrious history. 20th crown was captureda row at the endconclusion of the 2023-24 season, its 20th Scudeto.
Football Club Internazionale Milano (known as Internazionale, or simply as Inter) was founded in 1908 as a breakaway club from the Milan Cricket and Football Club (AC Milan of today). It took only two years for the first Scudetto to be won, at 1909-10. First Coppa Italia was won in 1938, due to the brilliance of the club’s greatest ever player, Giuseppe Meazza, who is also the club’s all-time top-goal scorer, with 284 goals in 408 matches that spanned 14 years.
Inter is forever attached to the man who has revised its style of football and, as a matter of fact, the whole of Italian football. Helenio Herrera signed as Inter’s manager in 1960 and stayed for eight seasons and he still is the longest serving manager the club has ever had. He is the one who first used the 3-5-2 formation, and thus invented the Catenaccio – the versatile counter-attack system with the rest of Italian clubs soon to follow. During his tenure, inter has won three Scudetto, two UEFA Champions League and two Intercontinental Cup.
Argentinian defender Javier Zanetti is the club’s longest serving player. Nicknamed Il Capitano (The Captain,) Zanetti joined Inter Milan in 1995 and has made 858 appearances for the club during 19 seasons.
Other club legends include Sandro Mazzola (116 goals in 417 matches between 1960-1977, the only club he has played for), Giacinto Facchetti (59 goals in 476 appearances), Alessandro Altobelli (128 goals in 317 appearances), Roberto Boninsegna, goalkeeper Walter Zenga, Germans Andreas Brehme, Lothar Matthäus and Jürgen Klinsmann, Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimović.
Inter plays its home matches at the San Siro stadium, also known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza which it shares with cross-town rivals A.C. Milan and the heated matches between the two are known as the Derby della Madonnina. Other match, for Inter supporters as important as the one against Milan, is the match against bitter rivals Juventus, known as the Derby d'Italia.
Nicknamed the Nerazzurri (black and blues), between 2006 and 2010, Inter Milan won five consecutive Serie A titles. Inter has also won the UEFA Champions League on three occasions. The club has also won the Coppa Italia nine times.
