Bővebben Genoa CFC
The “Vecchia Signora” of Italian football resides 171 km to the north-west in Turin, but it really should have been located south in the port city of Genoa, home of Italy’s first and oldest football club. It was an English doctor by the name of James Richardson Spensley that desired to represent England abroad and therefore added football to Genoa CFC (cricket and football club) in 1893, after it was founded as a cricket and athletics club.
So, Genoa might not be the “Old Lady”, but it is proudly “Il club piu antico d'Italia” - Italy’s oldest club. As such, the club is a permanent member of FIFA’s Club of Pioneers, the list that includes the oldest football clubs in the world who have played a crucial rule in the development of the game.
Genoa wasted little time in establishing itself not only as the founding father of Italy’s football, but also as its most prominent member. In 1897, the club first allowed locals to play in its football team. A year later, the Italian Football Association was established and Genoa won 7 titles between 1897-98 and 1903-04 (6 of them in a row). It has won 3 more championships (in 1914-15, 1922-23 and 1923-24) for 9 overall, which place it fourth on Italy’s championship list. Prior to World War II, in 1937, genoa has won it’s one and only Coppa Italia. The club spent most of its years in the Serie A, but could no longer compete for titles with powerhouses Juventus, AC Milan and Inter. It has reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals in 1991 but that was the last hurrah before the big nose-dive. It was relegated for the first time to Serie B in 1995 and later, due to its role in the match fixing scandal that has swapped over Italian football, was demoted to Serie C1. Genoa returned to Serie A before the 2007-08 season and stayed there ever since.
In recent years, Genoa has signed contracts with a series of mostly North American clubs in order to cooperate and strengthen the development of young talent as part of Genoa Youth Academy. As such, agreements have been reached with Next Level Soccer Academy (NLSA), PSC Iowa and Brazilian Soccer Training Center (BSTC) of Florida.
Genoa’s fiercest rivalry is with cross-town rivals Sampdoria, and the Genoa derby is named the Derby della Lanterna, after the port’s main lighthouse. The first derby was played in 1946-47 (a 3-2 Sampdoria win). As of 2017, 95 derbies were played, in which Genoa won 24, Sampdoria won 37 and 34 matches ended in a draw. The two teams share the 36,599-seat Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
Over the years, many mostly Italian notable players have played in the red and blue of Genoa. Among them is Gianluca Signorini, who recorded 207 appearances between 1988-1995, scored 5 goals and is the only player who’s number 6 shirt was retired by the club. Other players were strikers Giuseppe Sculli, Diego Milito, Alberto Gilardino, Luca Toni, Ciro Immobile and Marco Borriello, defender Leonardo Bonucci and midfielder Thiago Motta.
