Bővebben Galatasaray SK
After the 2014-15 season, four stars were added to the logo of Galatasaray, one to mark five Turkish Super Lig championships, for a total of 20 titles, presenting Galatasaray SK (Sport Klub) the most successful football club in Turkish history. And club’s history, just like its titles, contains some of the biggest names to play in football Turkey. Ever since, the club has won two more titles, in the conclusion of the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons.
Galatasaray resides in the European side of Istanbul. The club was founded in 1905 by Ali Sami Yen, a Turk with Albanian heritage, who was a sports official and was aided by some high school students. Properly, the club’s name is taken from Galatasaray High School. The same Ali Sami Yen will in later years receive the outmost respect, as the team played for 34 seasons in the stadium that carried his name, until it was demolished after the 2010-11 season.
Galatasaray is part of Turkey’s "Big Three" clubs of Istanbul, along with Beşiktaş, and Fenerbahçe, that carry decades of history of bitter rivalries. The Galatasaray–Fenerbahçe matches regarded as Turkey’s premium match and it is so important to fans, that they claim that winning the championship without winning the derby is almost worthless. Those derbies start long before kickoff, outside the stands, as mass armies of fans make their way into the stadium. The hatred between the fans is so big and rooted, that every so often it resulted into physical clashes and injuries, and it requires large forces of police and army to keep the groups of fans apart from each other. The derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe is dubbed the “Kıtalar Arası Derbi” (the Intercontinental Derby) because Galatasaray resides in the European part of the city and Fenerbahce in the Asian side. The derby against Besiktas regards as less heated but all the same, all parties concerned remains on high alert.
Over the years, some of Turkey’s leading football players wore the yellow and red uniform of Galatasaray, as well as some of the finest foreign players that have played in Turkey.
Galatasaray legend Bulent Korkmaz, who has played for Galatasaray his entire career, is the clubs all-time appearance leader, with 593 matches and 15 goals scored between 1987-2005. He is followed by another legend, Hakan Sukur, who played 539 matches for Galatasaray on three different periods (1992-1995, 1996-2000, 2003-2008) and scored 289 goals, second on the all-time list.
The club’s all-time leading goal scorer is Metin Oktay, who scored 349 goals for Galatasaray in 406 matches between 1955-1961 and 1962-1969. Another honorable mention is Fatih Terim, who played for Galatasaray in 402 matches between 1974-1985 and scored 16 goals, and after retiring managed the team on four periods (1996-2000, 2002-2004, 2011-2013, 2017-2022), in which he became the club’s most successful coach, winning six Super Lig championships four times in a row and the 2000 UEFA Cup in his first term.
Among the foreign players, two earns special mention: Brazilian goalkeeper Cláudio Taffarel came to Turkey in 1998 after winning the 1994 UEFA World Cup USA and played for three seasons After his heroics for Romania in the same world cup, midfielder Gheorghe Hagi recorded 132 matches and 59 goals for Galatasaray between 1996-2001 and is still regarded as the greatest foreign player to have ever played in Turkey.
Galatasary is the most successful side in Turkey having won the Super Lig a record 20 times. The club has also won the Turkish Cup 17 times, the Super Cup 15 times, 1 UEFA Super Cup and 1 UEFA Cup. The team also made the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions league in 1989 and have reached the quarter finals on five occasions to date.
