G.D. Estoril Praia is located in one of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches - Praia da Poca, right in the start of Estoril, on the Cascais Coast of the country’s capital Lisbon. The beach is also known by the name of Sao Joao do Estoril and it is a very popular leisure destination. The beach, made up of sandy white plain by a towering cliffs, is overlooked by an old castle and is regarded as one of Lisbon’s must see cites. True to location, the team’s crest is made up of blue and yellow, like the uniform itself, the bright sunlight shines on and the deep, navy blue represents the ocean.
Estroil is where the son played. His full name is Mattheus de Andrade Gama de Oliveira. In short, he is called Mattheus. At birth, his father named him after former Germany Captain and World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus. His father is, well, former Brazil great and World Cup winner himself Bebeto. Shortly after he was born, his father, with the rest of the Brazilian national team, traveled to North America for the 1994 World Cup’ before returning home with the gold medal. The son was made famous on a special day, when, in the California sun, Bebeto scored a goal in a 3-2 win over Holland. To celebrate, he raced for the outside lines and put his hands together, as a rocking the cradle gesture for a small baby, with a big, lighting smile all over his face. He was joined in celebration by fellow stars Mazinho and Romario. From that moment on, the little baby was known as bebeto Jr., or Bebetinho.
Years passed by and Matthaus grow up and became a footballer, an attacking midfielder, almost like his father. In 2015-16, he joined Estoril Praia on a loan spell and remained there for the next season. In all, he made 53 appearances in two seasons, scoring 6 goals. After the second season, Portugal powerhouse Sporting CP agreed to pay 3.5 million GBP for his services.
Grupo Desportivo Estoril Praia was established in 1939. The club made Portugal’s Primeira Liga in 1944-45 but was relegated a season later. Over the decades, it has bounced back and forth between the two leagues, last promotion was in 2012-13.
Estoril Praia play its home matches in 8,000-seat Estádio Antonio Coimbra da Mota.
