How and when does one starts when writing about Eric Clapton? It is surly not only the huge amount of songs, albums, bands or unforgettable live performances he has played on for a span of over 60 years and counting. Maybe it should be his enormous contribution to songwriting, and, Of course, to many generations of guitar players. Just maybe.
Or maybe it should be noted that Clapton is the only musician being inducted three times to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: for being a member of the Yardbirds, Cream and as a solo artist. He was later inducted also into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame and became the first British musician inducted into The Blues Foundation’s Blues Hall of Fame in Memphis, Tennessee.
Clapton's story and life resembles so many others of his generation – the lonely boy growing up with his grandparents, heaving difficulties maintaining social links and immersing himself in guitar playing. He was already an accomplished guitar player by the time he was 17 as he joined the Yardbirds. When the band scored their hit, "For Your Love", Clapton left, because all he wanted was to play blues and the band was leaning toward pop looking for success.
He then joined John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. The band's only album " John Mayall’s Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton" still serves a guitar instruction manual. Soon enough, Clapton left to form music's first super group, Cream, with bass player Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker. Success was enormous and graffiti on a London fence pretty much summed up Clapton's status as a guitar player: "Clapton is God", it read.
Two years later, Clapton was gone again, and into another super group. This time, it was Blind Faith with Baker, Stevie Winwood and Ric Grech. In between, he has contributed the miraculous guitar solo for the Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".
The album "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" (1970) which have produced one of the most unique and beautiful love songs of all-times, "Layla"', was Clapton's last as a member of a group - Derek and the Dominos. The same year, he has released his first solo album, "Eric Clapton". 21 albums have followed, and 10 live albums, including the immortal "Unplugged" (1992).
Up to date, Clapton has sold over 280 million albums worldwide. He has been awarded 103 Gold, Platinum, Multi-Platinum, and Diamond Sales Awards by the Recording Industry Association of America and has won, among others, 18 Grammy Awards. He is ranked near the top of every important and influential guitarist list of all-time.
Clapton is considered to singlehandedly revived the popularity of the Gibson Les Paul guitar and caused it to be put back into production. A Marshall amplifier is nicknamed "The Bluesbreaker" in honor of Clapton's contribution. Fender introduced the "Eric Clapton Signature Stratocaster" in 1988 which recreated the look and feel of his favorite guitar, “Blackie.” And in his honr, Martin Acoustic Guitars has created the standard Vintage Series EC model in 1996.
In the summer of 2024, Eric Clapton has embraced on a European tour, which will see him play gigs in England, Ireland, France and Italy.
