SV Darmstadt 98 has a lengthy pedigree having been established almost at the end of the nineteenth century. The team that you see playing today was the product of various mergers that have taken place over the years culminating in the current football team which after spending 33 years in the lower leagues of German football, finally won promotion to the Bundesliga for the 2016-17 season.
Darmstadt 98 is far more than a football team but an all-inclusive sports club with a membership in excess of 5,500 members. Other sports played within the club are athletics, hiking, basketball, judo and table tennis.
It was not until the 1970s that Darmstadt made even a tentative entry into the big time of German football. For the previous two decades they had been a second division side and not a particularly distinguished one either, generally being found in the middle or lower stretches of the table. They spent two isolated seasons in the Bundesliga in 1978-9 and 1981-82 but enjoyed little further league success for the remainder of the century and further into the 21st and the end of 2006-7 saw them relegated to the fourth division.
Worse was to follow with insolvency proceedings in March 2008 but this triggered a whole range of efforts to restore Darmstadt’s financial standing, including a friendly match against Bayern Munich and thus a new chapter was able to be written in the club’s history.
Progress was to be amazingly fast. They won the 2010–11 Regionalliga Süd and were promoted to the third division. Dirk Schuster became Head Coach in 2012 and made the crucial signing of Aytac Sulu who was to become club captain. 2013-14 a third place finish found Darmstadt in the promotion playoffs and a dramatic victory over two legs secured promotion to the second division.
Amazingly the very next season in the second division, a 1-0 victory in the very last match of the season against St Paul saw Darnstadt return to the Bundesliga after a wait of thirty three years.

Top scorer in 2015-16 was 29 year old Sandro Wagner who slotted home fourteen goals, doubtless his height of 6ft 4inches was a great help to him. Aytac Sulu has had an amazing effect on the team’s performance since he joined them – an inspiring captain, a rugged defender and at the same time someone quite capable of scoring crucial goals, frequently with his head.
Their current goalkeeper is Daniel Fernandes of Portuguese nationality although born in Germany and midfielder Florian Jungwirth, who played for Germany’s under-20 team, has become a fixture in the side, making over 70 appearances.
