One my call Bayer 04 Leverkusen in many names. As a matter of fact, many have been attached the football club over the last decades, none of them positive, all of them have referred to Bayer's inability to reach the top and stay there by the end of the season and to win trophies.
No more.
From now one, when one speaks about Bayer Leverkusen, the title Bundesliga champions should be attached. And, for that matter, 2023-24 double holders, after the club also won the DFB-Pokal. And it all came during an amazing season, in which the club played through undefeated. Bayer could have won the treble, had it not lost to Atalanta in the final of the UEFA Europa League.
With 51 wins without a loss, Leverkusen set the European record for longest unbeaten run across all competitions. And still unbeaten in domestic league and domestic cup during a full season, the count is still on.
Leverkusen is not considered one of Germany's major cities, hosting just 163,000 residents in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Football-wise, its neighbors include powerhouses, or former powerhouses, such as Borussia Dortmund, Koln, Dusseldorf and Borussia Monchengladbach. And yet, during the last two seasons, Bayer Leverkusen more than holds its own.
The reason is simple and can be attributed to a single name: Xabi. Or, in two names: Xabi Alonso. The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfield maestro has taken over Leverkusen – his first senior manager's job – and the club hasn't look back, proudly leading the Bundesliga and playing fantastic, refreshing brand of football.
Alonso came back to Germany after the start of the 2021-22 season, when the team was having difficulties. He very rapidly took it from the verge of relegation to the upper echelon of the league, playing, well, like Alonso the midfielder played – with ball and passing control. And yet, Alonso the manager does not hesitate to relate to Alonso the player, relaying on his players' natural abilities in the final third of the pitch.
During the 2023-24 season, after Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp announced he will step down by the end of the season, Alonso became the primary candidate to replace him, as well as taking over Bayern Munich. However, Alonso announced he is going nowhere. The question is how many players will Leverkusen – a small-market team that has to sell on a yearly basis in order to balance the books – be able to maintain.
Bayer was originally founded in 1904 by employees of Bayer Pharmaceuticals whose head office is in Leverkusen and after whom the team was named.
It was not until 1951 that Bayer reached the top level of German football where they stayed until relegation in 1956 and it was more than twenty years, in the 1979-80 season, that Bayer reached the Bundesliga. Over the following years, Bayer became established in the first tier of German football and the most dramatic evidence of their growing stature came in victory in the UEFA Cup in 1988. Having been 3-0 down to Espanyol after the first leg of the final, they drew even in the return match and then captured the title (3–2) on penalty kicks. Bayer also won the German Cup in 1993.
Between 1996 and 2010, Bayer were runners up in the Bundesliga five times and in the UEFA Champions League once. They have always been a competitive and a highly attractive side. Finishing fourth in the 2014-15 Bundesliga, they will feature in the play-off round of the Champions League and will be out to avenge past disappointments.
Also having come short on achievements over the years, some notable players played in the red and black stripes of Leverkusen: Young Michael Ballack, later of Bayern Munich and Chelsea and Germany's world cup glory, played three seasons with Leverkusen, before coming back for two more to close his carer Defender Lars Bender played 12 seasons for Bayer (2009-2021), with 256 appearances and 19 appearances for the national team Mexican forward Javier Hernández (Chicharito) scored 28 goals in 54 appearances in two seasons Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov scored 69 goals in 154 matches between 2001-2006 South Korean legend Cha Bum-kun scored 52 goals during six seasons in the 80's then there were Brazilian midfielder Emerson, forward Heiko Herrlich, Finish defender Sami Hyypia, Brazilian Jorginho, German bombers Stefan Kiesling (131 goals between 2006-18) and Ulf Kirsten (182 goals between 1190-2003) and the list goes on and on.
As far as 2023-24 Bayer Leverkusen go, there are only two questions remaining: Will the team be determining enough to lead Bayern Munich all through the season, and how long would Xabo Alonso remain in Leverkusen, before being tempted to one of Europe's biggest clubs.
