There can’t be many teams in the world of professional sport that take their name from a famous poem but the Baltimore Ravens are the exception to that rule. This all came about through a strange combination of events. The Ravens were established in 1996, when then-owner of the Cleveland Browns, Art Modell, announced relocation plans of the franchise to Baltimore. As part of a settlement between the league and the city of Cleveland, Modell was required to leave the Browns' heritage in Cleveland for a replacement team and replacement personnel that would take control in 1999 including the history and records of the Browns. In return, he was allowed to take his own personnel and team to Baltimore, where such personnel would then form an expansion team. The team's name was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's poem The Raven.
The Ravens are members of the North division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL) and play their home games at M&T Bank Stadium. Their team colors are purple, black, metallic gold and white and their mascots are Poe, a costumed mascot and live ravens Rise and Conquer.
The Ravens have made the playoffs ten times since 2000, with two Super Bowl victories (Super Bowl XXXV and Super Bowl XLVII), two AFC Championship titles (2000 and 2012), four AFC North division titles (2003, 2006, 2011 and 2012), and are currently the only team in the NFL to hold a perfect record in multiple Super Bowl appearances. They are valued at $1.5 billion, making the Ravens the 24th-most valuable sports franchise in the world.
Reviewing some of the all-time star players for the Baltimore Ravens, let’s start with Jonathan Ogden who was the Ravens first overall pick as an organization turned out to be the first Raven elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Ogden was an eleven-time Pro Bowl selection and named an All-Pro for nine season in which he played his entire career in Baltimore.
Ed Reed will go down in not only Ravens, but NFL history as one of the most prolific playmakers not to play on offense. He is the only player in league history to score a touchdown off a punt return, blocked punt, INT and fumble recovery. He totalled 14 TDs and 61 interceptions in his 11 seasons with the Ravens.
Joe Flacco has had an amazing career with the Ravens. Many people consider him the main reason the Ravens won Super Bowl XLVII. His run during those playoffs in which he tied Joe Montana‘s record for the most touchdown passes (11) without an interception was one of the greatest stretches seen in NFL history.
Playing middle line-backer his entire career, Ray Lewis is considered one of the greatest ever to play the position and the greatest Baltimore Ravens player of all time. He won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2000 and 2003, becoming the sixth player to win the award multiple times. Lewis was also the second line-backer to win the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award and the first to win the award on the winning Super Bowl team.
