Known as Das Team by the German-speaking Austrians, the Austria National Football Team has had a colorful history. The national football association was formed back in 1904, and even qualified for the 1934 FIFA World Cup, finishing fourth.
However, annexation by Germany and World War II caused difficulties for the team, with the team manager being forced to field a team balanced between German and Austrian players. After the war, Austria once again became independent from Germany and set their own course in football.
The 1954 World Cup was held in neighboring Switzerland where Austria lost in the semi-finals to…Germany. This began a downward trend that culminated in fans not being able to buy sports tickets to see Austria in the 1962 World Cup as the team decided not to participate.
Between the 1970s and 1990s, Austria qualified for multiple World Cups, often reaching the second round, but entered decline again from around 2000 until the 2016 Euro tournament for which they qualified in style. This led to talk of a new Austrian “Golden Generation” but unfortunately the tournament finals did not go as well as was hope. The group stage resulted in multiple losses and even a red card.
This brought on a crisis of confidence which caused Austria to fail to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
The team did, however, qualify for the Euro 2020, and hopes are high that fans who buy tickets now will see a great performance from Austria. The team features Bayer Leverkusen’s Aleksandar Dragovic who has been capped 80 times, Valentino Lando Lazaro who plays club football for Inter Milan, and many other players who ply their trade around Europe.
The quality is there, and those who purchase sports events tickets to see Austria’s matches at the Euro 2020 tournament might expect to see an upset or two – in football, anything can happen, and Austria may be looking to replicate their earlier successes.
With the potential for forward Marko Arnautović to play in any of the matches, spectators at the match will have the opportunity to see Austria’s leading currently active top goal scorer. He’s 18 goals away from the all-time record but stands a good chance of closing in on it.
If you buy tickets now from Sports Events 365, you’ll be able to witness the action of the Euro 2020 as it unfolds before your eyes. There’s no greater spectacle in European football and many teams are looking to go further than they ever have before.
