If you were already a football fan in the early 1970s, you would probably never forget how Ajax Amsterdam dominated European football. If you were not yet a knowledgeable fan, you probably have heard by now about legends such as Rinus Michels, Johan Cruijff, their unique way that has reinvented football, forever known as Total Football. And the story goes on and on.
Ajax Amsterdam (or AFC Ajax) is the most successful club in the Netherlands and is one of the most successful clubs in football world. It was founded in Amsterdam in 1900. First national titles were won in 1917 (a KNVB cup) 1918 and 1919 (Two consecutive wins of the first league). The club has won the domestic league title, the Eredivisie, a record 36 times, the last for the 2021-22 season, as well as the KNVB Cup a record 20 times. Ajax is also one of the most successful teams in European competitions, having won the European Cup 4 times, most recently in 1995. In total, Ajax has won 8 European cups and 2 intercontinental cups, more than any other Dutch team. It belongs in the narrow and prestigious list of only 5 clubs that have gained the European Cup for permanent stay, after its 3 consecutive wins of the title in the early 1970s.
The club’s greatest ever player was Dutch legend Johan Cruijff. Cruyff went on to manage the team from 1985 to 1988 where he won 2 KNVB Cups and a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. In 1964 and at the age of 17, Johan Cruijff made his debut in the first team. A year later, a former player of the club, Rinus Michels became the head coach of the team. Both, Michels and Cruijff led Ajax to glory with 3 consecutive national championships in the late 1960s and 4 appearances within 5 years in the final of the European Cup (winning it 3 consecutive times, an achievement that until then was only made by the glorious team of Real Madrid of the late 1950s). The style of football played by the team that thrilled football fans all around the world was the 'Total Football' which became synonymous with the club.
The 1990s saw a wonderful squad, led by manager Louis Van Gaal. This squad with many of the above mentioned players won the Eredivisie 3 consecutive times and made it to the final of the Champions League two times in a row, winning it once (in 1995). Other extraordinary players that have played for the club along the years are: Johan Neeskens, Johanny Rep, Marco Van Basten, Ronald Koeman, Zlatan Ibrahimovich and Luis Suarez.
Ajax's commitment to beautiful and attractive football begins at its youth academy. It is known all around the world as one of the best football academies for young players. Indeed, over the years many players that emerged from Ajax's academy became key players in Ajax itself and in the biggest clubs in Europe. Notable players that came out of Ajax's academy are: Johan Cruijff, Ruud Krol, Frank Rijkaard, Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Frank and Ronald de Boer, Patrick Kluivert, Dennis Bergkamp, Edwin Van der Sar, Wesley Sneijder and Rafael Van der Vaart.
As a relatively small-scale European club, playing in the small market of the Netherlands, Ajax is a club that has to relay on an outstanding youth academy that produces an incredible pool of local talent, as well a wide range of scouting services which allocates cheap-valued players, and has to sell its stars on almost a seasonal basis. For instance, after the 20231-22 season, the club had to sell star striker Sebastien Haller to Borussia Dortmund, midfielder Ryan Gravenberch and right-back Noussair Mazraoui to Bayern Munich, striker Anthony and center-back Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United, left-back Nicolas Tagliafico to Lyon as goalkeeper Andre Onana left for Inter. The price: close to 200 million Euro. The outcome: Ajax is penciled to mount an assault over all the titles in Dutch football and have another exciting European season.
