After six long seasons, Feynoord Rotterdam is once again champions of the Netherlands Eredivisie. Last time out, it was 2016-17 and feynnord won the league under former player turned manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst. This year, the red and white are guided by Arne Slot, who took three years to achieve the honor.
As stated in Feyenoord’s Foundation, “Feyenoord is the club that belongs to everyone”. In other words – we are not talking Ajax royalty here, but rather a blue-collar team. Feyenoord was founded in 1908 during a meeting of young people that took place in a café. The new club’s name was Wilhelmina. It took four more years until the club settled on its current, known name of Rotterdamsche Voetbal Vereeniging Feijenoord (Rotterdam Football Club Feijenoord) and now famous uniform – red and white shirts and black pants. It took 12 years for Feyenoord to gain promotion to Dutch first division and four more years to win its first championship. The working men’s club has arrived.
In 1937 a still existing local monument was established – Stadion Feyenoord, known around the world as De Kuip, the club’s home and fortress.
The 60’s were a splendid decade for Feyenoord. Other than 4 Dutch championships and 2 cups, Feyenoord became the first Dutch team to win the European Cup (now the Champions League) in 1969-70 after beating Celtic Glasgow, paving the way for a decade that will see Dutch domination. That team was full of Dutch internationals, among them Willem van Hanegem, Rinus Israel and Wim Jansen, all went on to star for the national team in 1974 World Cup in West Germany. And it didn’t end there. Feyenoord also became the first Dutch team to win the UEFA Cup in 1973-74. The club will have to wait until 2001-02 before winning the cup again.
In 2016-17, after almost two decades, Feyenoord lifted the championship trophy again. This time, the club was led by former player Giovanni van Bronckhorst behind the lines and on field by captain Dirk Kuyt, who came back to Rotterdam to finish his career. A year later, another local hero came back home. This time, it was Robin van Persie, who, like Kuyt, played for Turkish Fenerbahce before deciding to wear the white and red once again.
Feyenoord’s biggest rivalry is, of course, with hated Ajax Amsterdam. The match between the teams is known as De Klassieker and it often heats up, on and off the pitch.
Feynoord's home grounds is 51,177-seat De Kuip.
Overall, Feyenoord Rotterdam has won a total of 16 championships, 13 KNVB Cups and 4 Johan Cruyff Shields. The club has also won 1 European Cup, 2 UEFA Cups and 1 Intercontinental Cup.
