The US Open is a golf tournament staged by the United States Golf Association. It is played every year, and the first event took place in 1895. The only time the tournament was not played was during both the first and second World Wars, making the 2019 tournament the 118th in its history.
The very first tournament was played over 36 holes, but since 1898 it has been contested over 72 holes. The scoring system is stroke play, with the player at the end of the tournament with the lowest number of strokes being declared the winner. Sports tickets for the final day always sell well.
Oddly enough, the US Open was won by British golf players until 1911 when the first American-born winner was crowned. Since then, the majority of winners have been American. However, the lowest score overall was 268 strokes, set by Rory McIlroy from Ireland in 2011. This achievement also set the record for the most shots under par at 16. The previous record holder was Tiger Woods, who scored 12 under par in 2000. Prior to that, nobody had ever scored a figure in the double digits below par in the US Open.
The US Open is one of the four so-called majors of the golfing calendar. These are simply the four most important annual tournaments, and as such they include the best players and offer the highest amount of prize money.
Amateurs are welcome to compete as long as they meet the strict entry requirements. 156 players compete in total. Four men have won the US Open a record four times – Willie Anderson (a Scottish immigrant), Bobby Jones (an amateur), Ben Hogan, and Jack Nicklaus. Could Koepka win a third consecutive title? While several people have won the US Open 3 times or more, the only time 3 in a row has been achieved was by Willie Anderson between 1903 and 1905.
