The Scottish Premiership, sponsored by Ladbroke’s, is the latest incarnation of the top flight of Scottish football which has been in existence since the formation of the Scottish Professional Football League in July 2013, after the League was formed by a merger of the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League.
Since 2001 there have been just twelve teams in the top tier of Scottish football. In the Premiership the 12 clubs play 38 matches, with a split into a top and bottom six after 33 games. At the end of the season, the bottom club is relegated while the club in 11th place face the Championship play-off winners over two legs.
The season, running from August to May, contains two phases. Phase one sees each club playing three games against every other team, either once at home and twice away or vice versa. Once this phase is over with all clubs having played 33 games, there is a split into a 'top six' and a 'bottom six'. Each club then plays a further five matches, one against each of the other five teams in their own section. It then gets a little more complicated in that teams keep the points garnered in the first phase but they only compete within their own sections – leaving the strange situation that a club could end up with more points in the lower group then another team in the top group.
Obviously no one knows at the start of the season which of the teams will end up in which half of the table so the SPFL “predicts” which teams are likely to be where so as to try and ensure that there will be a fair balance of home and away fixtures.
Traditionally two teams have dominated Scottish football – the two Glasgow teams Celtic and Rangers. However because of their financial woes and the enforced relegation Rangers have only returned to the Premiership in the current season which has given Celtic a clear run to date. Celtic have won all three championships in the Premiership: in 2013-14 they were followed by Motherwell and Aberdeen; in 2014-15 by Aberdeen and Inverness Caledonian Thistle and in 2015-16 again by Aberdeen with Heart of Midlothian in third place. In the whole history of Scottish football, the top tier has been won 54 times by Rangers and 47 times by Celtic. Nine other clubs have reached the top but the last to do so was Aberdeen over thirty years ago in 1984-85.
Celtic’s top scorer in 2015-16 was Leigh Griffiths with 31 goals; this feat earned him the double accolade of being voted Players’ Player of the Year and Writers’ Player of the Year. Scottish football is known for its passion and skill and a visit to any of the Premiership grounds will be an enjoyable sporting experience.
