It may not get the publicity of the English FA Cup, nor the results that take everyone by surprise, but the Coppa Italia (or the TIM Cup) is still a fascinating event with top teams competing and a high level of quality football. And as recently as 2017, the Italian Football Federation has shown that it can learn from others’ experience and adapt to changes.
The Serie A looked across the Atlantic to the Premier League, where high holidays football is played as part of tradition, attracting large crowds from all over the world, and thus has decided that they want a piece of the pie too. After giving it a consideration they have come to a conclusion that Italian Serie A and Coppa Italia matches will be played during the Christmas period, where the traditional winter break will be delayed to January 7-20.
The change is necessary. Italian teams lost some of their power among Europe’s elite, and the national team certainly didn’t help, failing to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia for the first time in six decades. Said Roma GM Mauro Baldissoni: “The concept is simple. Professional soccer is an entertainment product and offering it during the holiday period is a great opportunity for those in charge. Not taking advantage of this period and leaving it to other leagues means losing competitively in the international market, so we've decided to get involved during this period."
Coppa Italia competition is open to teams from Italy’s four professional divisions: 20 teams from Serie A, 22 teams from Serie B, 27 teams from Serie C and 9 teams from Serie D. During the 1st round, Serie C and Serie D teams will compete one against the other, with 18 winners to play against Serie B teams during the 2nd round. During the 3rd round, the 20 winners will meet the12 Serie A teams seeded 9-20 and during the 4th round, the 16 winners will face each other, with winner moving up to the round of 16. During the second phase of the competition, only the semi-finals are a two-legged meet.
Over the years, there has been some fascinating games involving unbelievable comebacks during the Coppa Italia:
Palermo-Siena 4-4 (Round of 16, 2011-12, Siena won 3-0 on penalty shout-out)
Siena took the lead in the 21st minute through Reginaldo and Josip Ilicic made it 1-1 from the penalty spot. Pablo Gonzalez gave Siena a 2-1 lead before half-time. Ilicic scored his second early in the second half before Reginaldo put Siena 3-2 up in the 59th minute. Palermo equalised for the 3rd time in stoppage time, when Ilicic completed his hat-trick by scoring again from the penalty spot. During extra time the Sicilian side took the lead for the first time through Nicolas Bertolo to make the score 4-3 after 98 minutes. Two minutes later, Siena equalized and made it 4-4.
Juventus-Hellas Verona 3-2 (Final 1982-83)
La Vecchia Signora were a force in world football in the 1980s with Italian stars such as Paolo Rossi and Dino Zoff together with foreign talents like France’s Michel Platini and Poland’s Zbigniew Boniek. During the season, Juventus lost the Scudetto to Roma and the European Cup to Hamburg. The Gialloblu, who had been promoted from Serie B, were the surprise of that campaign after finishing fourth in Serie A.
In the first leg in Verona, the home side sealed a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Domenico Penzo and Domenico Volpati. The rematch was held three days later in Turin. Rossi scored an early goal and 10 minutes from time Platini evened the score. The match went into extra time and Platini scored the winner with a minute remaining, to give Juve their 7th Coppa Italia title.
Inter-Juventus 3-3 (2015-16 Semi-final, Juventus won 5-3 on penalty shot-out)
Juventus won the 1st match 3-0 in turin and went to Milano with a comfortable lead. However, the hosts took the lead in the 17th minute through Marcelo Brozovic and that was the score at the half. Ivan Persic made it 2-0 in the 48th minute. With 10 minutes to go, Inter completed its comeback as Perisic won a penalty which was converted by Brozovic. No team scored in extra time and during the penalty shout-out, where Leonardo Bonucci scored the winner.
Juventus holds the record with 12 Coppa Italia trophies, followed by Rome (9), Inter (7), Fiorentina (6) and Lazio (6).
