Davis Cup is one of the oldest and most respected national teams' competition in the world of sports, running, excluding two world wars, without interruption since 1900, and entering its 123 years of existing. Traditionally, it is an all-male competition, as the feminine equivalent is the Billie Jean King Cup, named after the great American champion.

Just like Golf's Ryder cup, Davis Cup started as a competition between the Great Britain and the United States under the name International Lawn Tennis Challenge. The tournament was soon named after Dwight F. Davis, an American tennis player and a politician, who, among others, served as the American Secretary of War in the 1920's. Davis served as captain of the American team that won the first competition, held in Boston, Massachusetts.

Up until 1973, the Davis Cup allowed entry only for amateur players, but due to changes in world (and political) sports, pros were allowed to compete.

The tournament hosts the best 18 teams in the world according to its International Tennis Federation (ITF) ranking. The rest of the teams are divided into three regional zones (Americas, Asia/Oceania, and Europe/Africa) and play elimination rounds. Each match is played according to the best of five, with four singles matches and one doubles.

The captain of each team is an honorary appointment, usually goes to an ex player, which serves as a coach. The captain does not participate in matches and he is the one to select the participating players.

Along its long history, some of the biggest names in world tennis served as their teams' captain, among them Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall and John Newcombe (Australia), and Jimmy Connors, John McEnro, Arthur Ashe and Andre Agassi (United States).

The United States holds the record for a number of wins with 32, followed by Australia (28), France and Great Britain (10 each).

The 2023 David Cup will be the 111 edition of the competition. Group stage matches will be under way in September.
