The Primera (First) Division of the Argentinian League forms the apex of the country’s football league. Contested between twenty teams it operates a promotion/relegation arrangement with the Primera B Nacional league. The season runs from August through to May of each following year. Interestingly this league was founded in 1891 by an ex-pat Scotsman and was the first football league competition to be staged outside the British Isle. The League has been professional since 1931 and in its current format since 1991-92. Two years ago the International Federation of Football History & Statistics voted the Primera División to be the seventh in the list of the strongest leagues in the world.
The League is now in the process of a major transformation, a process that will be extended over several seasons. It began in 2014 when the first five clubs of the Zones A and B from the 2014 Primera B Nacional season will be promoted to the Primera División. That meant that from February to December 2015, the league will be contested between thirty teams. Two teams will be relegated to and two teams will be promoted from Primera B Nacional. This will continue until June 2019 when the league will be finally reduced to 24 teams.
Let’s look at some of what have been historically the top teams in Argentinian football. The River Plate team from Buenos Aires has won the Primera no fewer than 36 times which is a record in itself. Their most recent title was in 2014. Among the notable players who have performed for them are goalkeeper Amadeo Carrizo who made 520 appearances for the Club between 1945 and 1968 and forward Angel Labruna who holds the record for the second highest appearances with 515 (1939-1959).
Deadly rivals of River Plate are Boca Juniors, who have an exceptional record of achievement. The Juniors, who hail from the La Boca area of Buenos Aires, have remained in the Primera ever since being promoted in 1913. They are the most successful team in Argentina having amassed 63 official titles including 30 Primera Division championships. Martin Palermo is the Club’s highest goal scorer who has slotted in 236 goals in his two stints with Boca Juniors and Diego Maradona finished his professional career with the club in 1997.
Currently San Lorenzo are tied with Boca in the league standings on 28 points with Rosano Central on 27, Belgrano on 26 and River Plate on 25.
