CONCACAF is the acronym for the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football. The upcoming 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup will be the 13th edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup competition and 23rd CONCACAF regional championship overall in CONCACAF's fifty years of existence.
There are many fascinating football duels coming up in this tournament which is chiefly held in the USA but with one game played in Toyota, Japan and another in Toronto, Canada, Japan and Canada acting as co-hosts. The CONCACAF Gold Cup kicks off on 7th July with Panama v Haiti (Toyota) followed by USA v Honduras later on the same evening and runs right through to the final to be held in Philadelphia on 26th July. Football fans in the Americas are in for a treat of high class sport for three weeks this summer.
Let’s review the expected favorites for this tournament – although we can expect to be proved wrong as most previews tend to be! The traditional favorites are the US and Mexico who between them have won eleven of the twelve previous Gold Cups, with the US taking the 2013 edition after Mexico lifted the trophy in 2009 and 2011.
Among the USA’s star performers are Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan, 21 year old Deandre Yedlin from Tottenham Hotspur, Fabian Johnson from Borussia Mönchengladbach and Danny Williams from Reading. Mexico’s team will be centered around Chicharito and Vela combining up top, Guardado and Herrera reprising their World Cup roles with Jose Juan Vazquez in the center and Hector Moreno and Diego Reyes at the heart of their defense.
Costa Rica is expected to provide a stern challenge being the current Central America champions. Familiar names include Joel Campbell from Arsenal and Christian Gamboa from West Bromwich Albion. Other teams that could well make a showing are Panama, Honduras, Canada and Jamaica.
