Toronto is a great city to live in and a really interesting and refreshing place for the tourist and the traveller. One of the great cities of North America and the largest in Canada, Toronto is in fact only outstripped in size by four others throughout the continent. So a backwater it isn’t!
Here are just a few pointers to what makes Toronto a very special place to be in. It may not be widely appreciated that the city started life in 1793 under a different name – it was known as York and not incorporated and given its new name of Toronto until 1834.ainly
Toronto is certainly cold in the winter – in fact it is often very cold indeed with temperatures going down to the “minus twenties” or lower in the depth of winter. However winter always gives way to spring and summer and the city enjoys on average over 300 days of sunshine a year with one reported high of 41 Centigrade.
Toronto holds some unusual records worthy of being followed up in person. It boasts the largest underground pedestrian system in North America, linking shops and offices, bars and restaurants, car parks, subway and railway stations and covers 28 kilometres.
Another record which the city holds is for the longest single day parade in North America. . This is called the Caribana and stretches to some 3.6 kilometres. If you come for the beginning at 10 am let’s hope you have plenty of stamina and the finish is usually around ten hours later. If you come (and if you can you should) you will be rubbing shoulders with over a million fellow spectators and watching thousands of participants in colourful costumes.
On virtually any day of the year you can visit the Toronto Zoo, the largest in Canada, and watch out for around 16,000 different animals from hundreds of varied species.
Sports fans are well catered for in Toronto. Most of the city flocks to watch and certainly supports the Maple Leafs Ice Hockey team – tickets are hard to come by even though the team hasn’t won the Stanley Cup in nearly fifty years. You will also find the Raptors (basketball), the Blue Jays (baseball), as well as teams playing American football, soccer, lacrosse and field hockey. And don’t feel you just have to watch sport – there are plenty of opportunities to participate, notably for skaters as Toronto has no fewer than 52 outdoor skating rinks open during mid-winter.
Add to all this a plethora of green parks and every possible cultural experience including opera, ballet, classical musical concerts and theatre, twenty film festivals – truly the mark of a great and civilised city, always worth a visit but the locals would add “especially in the fall”.
