Prague is undoubtedly one of the great cities of Europe if not the world. History speaks from its buildings, streets, roads, bridges and surroundings. What is it that makes Prague so very special? Well obviously there are many really popular sights. Prague Castle is the largest castle complex in the world, Charles Bridges with its thirty ornate statues or Old Town Square with the intricate and fascinating Astronomical Clock, there are things that Prague can be proud of.
The centre of Prague is like a history book and has become a World Heritage Site, the largest city complex to become one. The historic Prague was built between the 11th and 18th centuries, the Old Town, the Lesser Town and the New Town indicate the great architectural and cultural influence enjoyed by this city since the Middle Ages. There are many magnificent monuments, such as Hradcani Castle, St Vitus Cathedral, Charles Bridge and numerous churches and palaces, built mostly in the 14th century under the Holy Roman Emperor, Charles IV. Charles Square (Karlovo namesti) is one of the largest squares in Europe and the statue of Jan Zizka on Vitkov Hill is the biggest equestrian statue in the world..
In more modern achievements remember Strahov Stadium in Prague 6 which at 63,000 square meters is the largest stadium in the world. The Sazka sports hall .is one of the most modern buildings of its kind, capable of housing both sporting and cultural events. Underneath the hall are pipes that provide four restaurants, seven bars and twenty snack-bars with beer. The system is able to tap 10,000 litres of beer in fifteen minutes. For getting around, use the tram system which is considered to be the most comprehensive in Europe transporting about 340 million people a year.
Prague is also a renowned home of opera and orchestral music, of theatre and dance. It is advisable to book early for the Opera as tickets are very much in demand but there are all kinds of smaller intimate recitals going on around the town so no music lover need be disappointed.
